I was seven when my father took my brother and I to see Superman. As kids, we were floored by that movie, and Superman immediately became our hero. Our mother later bought us matching t-shirts with Christopher Reeve as Superman flying across the front of them. I loved that shirt and didn't give it up until it was practically a rag.
My play-cousin Monica Alexander had a huge poster of Christopher Reeve as Superman in her bedroom over her bed, and she kissed it each night before she went to bed.
When I heard Jesus was going to be the "new" Superman, I immediately thought, no one can replace Christopher Reeve, and no one can.
Superman died for me today. Even after his accident, I had faith that he would one day be able to walk again. Hearing the news of his death today made me feel like I lost one of my heroes, because hearing the news of his death was like someone telling me Superman died.
Although Superman is his most famous role, Christopher Reeve had other parts that were equally good. If you are looking for films to add to your Netflix list, try Street Smart in which Reeve plays opposite Morgan Freeman as a reporter who makes up a pimp and his initiation into street life as a means if writing another award-winning article. Somewhere In Time is a beautiful love story with a time-travel twist, and Above Suspicion is a good movie with a pre-Sex and the City Kim Catrall, but it always weirded me out because he plays a paralyzed man in that movie, and shortly after I saw it, he was really paralyzed. Another bit of minutiae is that Above Suspicion was actually co-written by William H. Macy, who also appeared with Reeve in Somewhere in Time.
Rest In Peace, Christopher Reeve. You will always be Superman to me.
:(
I remember that morning. Dad woke us up REALLY early, and I think I even fell asleep in the theatre. Too early for some kids to be up, watching a movie! Remember how LOUD that sumbitch was? I remember keeping my head pressed into Dad's shoulder out of straight up fear of going deaf.
Nobody who has ever played a superhero in film has EVER owned a role like Reeve did Superman. When I saw vigils in the street with the "\S/" crest on them, I was touched.
BTW, for the record, Jim Caviezel isn't going to be Superman, and neither is Tom Welling. Thank God!

Oh really? Good then. They don't need to remake Superman. They need to leave the legend just as it is.
