I never was a big Full House fan. I jumped on the Olsen bandwagon with “It Takes Two”, and I haven’t jumped off since. I have loved the Olsen Twins since they were in that movie with Kirstie Alley, Steve Guttenberg, and "Heddy" from Herman’s Head. I try to catch Two of a Kind on ABC Family whenever it’s on, and I will watch most anything featuring the Olsen Twins on television. I used to think they were the ugliest babies, but those monkey faces have given way to two blue-eyed beauties that can write their ticket to basically anywhere. There was no way I wasn’t going to watch New York Minute.
New York Minute was a playful, fun flick featuring the twins playing twin sisters that are total opposites living with their father (Dr. Drew) and the memory of their deceased mother. Ashley plays Jane Ryan, the studious, outgoing overachiever. Mary Kate plays Roxy, a truant drummer in an all-boy band. The girls get off to a bad start when they get kicked off the same train ride in a case of mistaken identity. What follows from there is a campy and totally unbelievable romp through New York City, which while totally lacking in credibility, is overflowing with the kind of cuteness we’ve come to expect from Ash and MK, and in its resolution we find the requisite lesson and happy ending that leaves us smiling and loving those twins even more.
Those looking for a more grown up Mary Kate and Ashley will be semi-disappointed. The sophisticated and streetwise Ashley and MK probably won’t debut in public until after the putting on of the freshman fifteen and a year of drunken NYU debauchery in Washington Square Park. The one love interest kiss we are given is over so quickly, if you looked down to find the Raisinet you dropped in the popcorn, you missed it. There are five minutes during which the girls run around New York scantily clad in a bathrobe and a bath towel. Other than that, we didn’t see anything of the twins that we haven’t seen in any of their other films and I’m happy about that. Relay all the cocaine rumors you want, the twins will always be pure and angelic in my book. They’re like my little girls, and I’ll not have you sullying their honor.
This wasn’t supposed to be a summer blockbuster. It’s a ninety-one minute commercial/PSA from the Mary Kate and Ashley publicity machine. I always get distracted when I’m watching their movies, because I spend too much time trying to figure out which twin is which; supposedly one is taller than the other, but I’ve never been able to remember or figure out which is which. New York Minute does exactly what it is supposed to do. It provides a vehicle in which the twins can capitalize on their cherubic faces and make money on books, video sales, posters, their clothing line and merchandising. Mary Kate and Ashley are millionare NYU freshmen, and they are a brand as pointed out by Nell Minow; they are not actresses or movie stars, and they don’t care which way Ebert and Roeper want to stick their thumbs. They just want to make sure that they stay fresh in the minds of all the young girls that want to emulate them, so when the next video tape/book spinoff/doll is put on the shelves, those same fresh minds will be on their parents to buy them all things Mary Kate and Ashley.
This isn’t a movie you’ll watch over and over again. As we speak, I am sealing it back in its red envelope to return it to Netflix, and I just got it today. New York Minute is cute, fast and forgettable, but it’s an Olsen Twins movie, so you have to watch it.
